Earlier this week algae fuel startup Sapphire Energy announced that it’s in the process of raising a whopping $144 million from private investors, which will be used to build out its first commercial demonstration algae farm in New Mexico. That farm may possibly be able to produce 1.5 million gallons of Sapphire’s green crude per year by 2014, says Sapphire’s VP of Corporate Affairs, Tim Zenk.

That might sound impressive, but it’s a far weep from the company’s previous projections. Back in 2009, Sapphire was hoping its algae farm would be able to produce 1 million gallons of green crude per year by 2011, followed by 100 million gallons per year by 2018, and 1 billion gallons per year by 2025. When Sapphire made those projections, the sheer volume was so much more than any of their competitors were putting out there, that I questioned if Sapphire was going to be “the gorilla of algae fuel?“

Midtronics GRX-5100 simplifies servicing hybrid and EV batteries

As we go away from traditional fossil fuel-burning automobiles towards hybrids and EVs, we’re presented with new challenges — explicitly servicing those vehicles and their high-voltage batteries. When it comes time for transport, in the event of an industrial accident or when components need to be serviced in isolation, it’s de rigueur to completely drain the cells on board, and that’s where Midtronics‘ GRX-5100 comes in. The vehicle battery service and de-potential tool is wrapping up field hard at GM and may soon find itself in “reclamation yards” (read: junk yards) as well as your local mechanic. With hard out of the way Midtronics diplomacy to ramp up manufacture before the end of the year, and its updateable firmware means it will be able to handle prospect vehicles with nothing more than an upgrade loaded on a USB key. For more info check out the PR after the break.

Optimus 4X HD

LG Korea has announced that the company's upcoming international flagship, the Optimus 4X HD, will arrive in select European counries starting next month. The 4X HD, which is powered by a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 CPU and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, will launch in the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Italy and Poland in June.

LG's new baby, which we first saw at MWC, before getting our hands on it again last week at CTIA, also sports a 720p IPS show, an 8MP BSI camera, 2150mAh battery and a re-vamped version of LG's UI skin. There's no word on U.S. availability just yet, but unconfirmed rumors have suggested this thing may arrive on T-Mobile as the "G4X" — a successor to last year's G2X.

You'll find more about the LG Optimus 4X HD in our hands-on report from CTIA.

Apple has pushed out Apple TV software version 5.0.1 (4224), aka iOS 5.1.1 (9B206f). The update applies to both the 2010 Apple TV (720p) and 2012 Apple TV (1080p). No new features are shown following the update, and no new air force seem to have been added, so this may possibly well be a bug fix and performance enhancement release.

LG Optimus Elite on pre-order at Virgin Mobile; carrier's first NFC phone

Sprint may already count the LG Optimus Elite among its roster of smartphones, but today that handset is finding a second home at Virgin Mobile. The $150 Gingerbread-powered device is now up for pre-order, and Virgin says it will start shipping on May 15th. Though the 3.5-inch HVGA show, 800MHz CPU and 5-MP rear camera aren’t just so impressive specs, the Optimus Elite stands out as the carrier’s first phone to include NFC and Google Wallet for mobile payments. Unlike Sprint, which offers a white version, Virgin Mobile will only sell the Optimus Elite in silver. And even as the former carrier prices the phone at just $30 after a mail-in rebate, Virgin’s cheaper monthly diplomacy might convince customers that it’s worth shelling out more up front.

Industry Forecasts Strong Investments in Energy Storage space Markets

Within the U.S., industry analysts forecast that $240 billion will be invested in storage space grid applications over the next 10 years. Overall, government support is strong with the Specialty of Energy (DOE) Smart Grid Demonstration Grants project investing $772 million. Strong investments from the government and venture capitalists, successful demonstration projects, and recent technological advancements have all contributed to strong growth in the storage space market.

Market drivers are energy independence and security; smart grid investments; time of use/peak demand rates; increase in renewables and distributed generation; and government policies, incentives and regulations. Though all sectors of the energy storage space market show strong potential, from an attention perspective distributed generation devices, renewable systems, and ancillary air force show the greatest near term growth potential. Global opportunity over the next 10 to 20 years is estimated at upwards of 300 gigawatts (GW) in size, which translates into $200-$600 billion in value.

Japan is preparing to bolt turbines onto barges and build the world’s largest commercial potential sow by perched windmills, tackling the engineering challenges of an unproven technology to cut its dependence on atomic energy.

Marubeni Corp. (8002), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (7011) and Nippon Steel Corp. (5401) are among developers erecting a 16-megawatt pilot sow off the coast of Fukushima, site of the nuclear industrial accident that pushed the government to pursue cleaner energy. The project may be expanded to 1,000 megawatts, the trade ministry said, larger than any wind farm flat to the seabed or on land.

“Japan is surrounded by deep oceans, and this poses challenges to offshore wind turbines that are attached to the bottom of the sea,” Senior Vice Environment Minister Katsuhiko Yokomitsu said at a meeting in Tokyo this month. “We are keen for perched offshore wind to become a viable technology.”

All likes accessories, right? At tonight's Unpacked event in London, Samsung unveiled a whole heap of official accessories for the Galaxy S III. From cases, to docks and even a "Pebble."

So the Pebble isn't just a Pebble. It's basically an updated version of the ancient Pebble MP3 players Samsung used to sell. Covered in the "Hyperglaze" end as with the phone, it's designed purely as an accessory to the Galaxy S III. It has 4GB of internal storage space, and one use case is taking it out on a run to listen to your music, without the need to take your new, expensive Galaxy S III with you.

Cases are cases, and it's hard to get excited about them. But we've got them nonetheless. There's a selection of hard shell and leather flip cases available to protect your shiny new Galaxy.

There's a few different docks available too. As you would expect, there's an official Car Dock which is basically an official Samsung branded cradle. No contact less charging on the Galaxy S III. The desktop is also full care of, with a Desktop Dock and a simple battery charging stand.

Samsung are also donation up their own, branded HDTV adaptor which is pretty much a standard MHL adaptor. There's also a pretty cool sounding wireless charger, which didn't seem to be out on show.
